POLITICS & POLICY MAKING
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Islamabad has formally requested the Election Commission to extend the deadline for submitting nomination papers for the upcoming local body elections by three days.
The decision came after a meeting chaired by PTI District President Aamir Mughal, who stated that December 26 is an official holiday in Islamabad, which could cause difficulties for candidates in submitting their papers.
Aamir Mughal criticized the short submission window for 1,125 councilors across 125 union councils in the first phase of local body elections, describing it as “unfair.” He also alleged that recent amendments to the Local Bodies Act 2015 promoted rigging and horse trading by abolishing the direct elections of chairmen and vice-chairmen, allowing elected councilors’ loyalties to be influenced.
Despite these challenges, Mughal affirmed that PTI would fully participate in the elections, citing widespread public dissatisfaction with the PML-N and its allies. He emphasized that the people of Islamabad support PTI and its chairman, Imran Khan.
The PTI leadership also addressed the withdrawal of the party’s election symbol, “Bala,” directing candidates to instead declare themselves under the “Sunni Ittehad Council” in their nomination papers.
Following the meeting, PTI Islamabad submitted a formal request to the Chief Election Commissioner and District Election Commissioner Islamabad seeking a three-day extension for submission of nomination papers.
