A local court on Monday granted pre-arrest bail to qawwal Faraz Amjad Khan after he was booked for performing a song associated with former Prime Minister Imran Khan at a government-sponsored cultural programme.
The First Information Report (FIR), filed by Shalimar Gardens in-charge Zameerul Hasan, claimed that Faraz Amjad Khan gave the event “political colour” by singing a song that referenced “Qaidi No. 804,” a nickname for the PTI founder.
During the hearing, Additional District and Sessions Judge Shazaib Dar considered the bail application filed by the artist, who appeared before the court.
Amjad’s counsel argued that the singer had no political affiliation and had performed the song at the request of participants. The lawyer requested pre-arrest bail so his client could join the investigation and prove his innocence.
After preliminary arguments, the judge granted bail and asked the police to submit the case record.
The FIR was registered by Baghbanpura police on Sunday night following the performance of the song ‘Nak Da Koka 2 Murshid’ at the Walled City of Lahore Authority’s programme on January 3. The complainant alleged that the qawwal and his band members deliberately performed an inciting political song without permission, causing public unrest and posing a risk to law and order.
The case invokes Sections 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention), 109 (abetment), 153-A (promoting enmity), 504 (intentional insult to provoke breach of peace), and 505 (statements conducing to public mischief) of the Pakistan Penal Code.
