Rumors of Governor’s Rule in KP as PTI Supporters March Towards Islamabad

Tensions are escalating in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) as the province’s Chief Minister, Ali Amin Gandapur, led a contingent of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) supporters toward Islamabad. Amid this rising political activity, a significant meeting between KP Governor Faisal Karim Kundi and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday night has sparked rumors about the possible imposition of governor’s rule in the province.

The meeting, confirmed by both the Prime Minister’s Office and the Pakistan People's Party (PPP), has not been elaborated upon, leaving room for speculation. Many are now questioning whether the federal government is considering invoking Article 234 of the Constitution, which allows the president to assume control of a province if there is a failure in the constitutional machinery.

Governor Kundi, in an interview with Hum News, addressed the rumors directly, stating that he had no intention of ruling the province. He emphasized that he did not want to turn PTI from a “political orphan to a political martyr.” However, Kundi acknowledged that the Constitution does provide for such a contingency, although he was not aware of any current plans from the federal government to take this step.

Article 234 grants the president the authority to assume control of the provincial government’s functions through the governor for up to two months. This decision must then be ratified by both houses of Parliament in a joint session. Although this provision exists for emergency situations, it remains unclear whether the federal government will pursue this option.

The growing tensions in KP, combined with the political maneuvering in Islamabad, have left many wondering what the next steps will be for the PTI and the province. As the situation continues to evolve, both supporters and critics of the PTI are watching closely, anticipating what could be a significant shift in the political landscape of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
